We had a garage sale this past weekend with some friends that are getting ready to move to seminary. As some people were looking through our things they said, “Wow. They are not selling junk. They are selling good stuff!” Some others asked us, “Are you sure you want to sell this?” We got questions left and right about the things that we were selling. To their surprise we were not phased by selling our “nice” things. Looking back I realize how far God has brought us on this journey to serve Him in Costa Rica. We have sold our wonderful house and many of our “prized” possessions. We sold our flat screen TV that we had hardly anytime to enjoy. We sold furniture that Jacob designed and made especially for our house. We have sold other art that he created and items that were special to our children. However, God has changed our hearts as only He can. They are just “things of the earth.” And He has made them “grow strangely dim.”
We are focused on serving Him. We are turning our eyes to Him. As He has grown this desire to share His glory and grace we no longer desire the things that we used to. We no longer desire to drive the nicest minivan we could afford. We no longer desire to pay outrageous prices for our kids to look perfect with the perfect bow in their hair… We no longer desire to live in this world, but desire to let loose of everything and serve Him no matter what the cost. This desire is not of our own efforts however. This is His work in us. He changed our hearts. As we were open to seeking Him through His word and prayer and being willing to do as He leads HE has changed our desires!
Not only has He changed Jacob and my desires, but He has also done work in our children. They are 100% ready to go to Costa Rica. Every time we pack our bags to go visit family in Kershaw or Columbia they ask “Are we going to Costa Rica? Is it time?” They would leave today if we said it was time and be excited about it. They have been wonderful about the selling of their toys. Not perfect, but have understood that we have to sell it in order to move. They have been wonderful about the move to our temporary house and have even said that they like it better. They went from each having their own room to now all sharing a room! They had to change schools and were such troopers about it! God is so good!
“TURN YOU EYES TOWARD JESUS. LOOK FULL IN HIS WONDERFUL FACE. AND THE THINGS OF EARTH WILL GROW STRANGELY DIM IN THE LIGHT OF HIS GLORY AND GRACE.”
